DeathStar Help
Getting Started
- DeathStar doesn't do a lot, but it works when nothing else does! When your PPC locks up, and won't let you do anything else, DeathStar can close down the application that is causing the problem, and allow you to continue your work.
- DeathStar runs in the background, so that it's available when you need it. Hold down the Exit button for a little more than 5 seconds, and the DeathStar main screen will show. If DeathStar has detected a task that's become unresponsive, then it will already be highlighted in the list of currently running tasks.
- Just select Terminate Task, and DeathStar will shut it down. Then select Cancel to make DeathStar return to the background.
- If a task is not highlighted, then you may want to just cancel out of DeathStar and wait another minute or so. The system may just be temporarily confused, and it's not a bad idea to give it a little more time to sort things out.
- If you bring up DeathStar again and nothing's highlighted, then you're on your own. Start selecting and Terminating the tasks that you think may be causing the problem. After shutting down each one, Cancel out of DeathStar to see if the system's become free again.
- When DeathStar Cancels out, it paints the whole screen white. If it remains white, then the machine is probably still out to lunch. Bring up DeathStar again, and shut down something else.
- If it seems to take forever for DeathStar to come up after you've pressed the Exit button, you can shorten the time. In Preferences / "Exit" Wait, you can set a shorter time, in seconds. The downside is that it may come up at unexpected times, when all you're trying to do is use Exit! Not to worry, just hit Cancel, and it'll retreat.
- Also in Preferences, you'll find one of DeathStar's smallest but coolest features. Leave a check mark next to Kill CF Notice, and DeathStar will answer "yes" to that brainless "Do you really want to use your Storage Card?" question that these machines ask after a soft reset.
- To get rid of DeathStar's small StartUp message, remove the check mark from Show at StartUp.
- Remember that there are times when the whole operating system becomes corrupted, and even DeathStar will not be able to run. If it's just a misbehaving program, though, it should work for you. Good Luck!
