Getting Started

• There are really just a few things that StarTap does: It launches applications, manages already running tasks, and manages files - but it does 'em really well!

• Startap maintains a set of folders that contain shortcuts to applications and documents. You can create a shortcut for any application or document you have, and you can name and organize the shortcuts and folders however you darned well please. After a shortcut is created, a single tap launches it.

• When StarTap is first installed, there will be five shortcuts on the Desktop: Tasks, Explorer, Control Panel, Recycle, and Clock. Most of these should be familiar. The Clock shows a combination desktop clock / calendar view, which is most useful when the PPC is in it's cradle, on the desk.

• The "Tasks" folder is special. In here are the tasks that are currently running on your palmtop. Tap on one to switch to it, or tap on "close" and then the task icon to close it down.

• At the top of the screen, there's a ToolBar, with a Menu hidden underneath it (see the section on Command Bands). Tap on the double ended arrows near the left end to expose the menu. Hold down a button to show the name of its function, then drag the stylus away from the button to avoid activating it.

• Here at Thumbs Up! we believe that if you can't do it with just your thumbs, maybe you shouldn't do it at all. All of the ordinary operation of StarTap is "finger friendly," and doesn't require the use of the stylus.

• On the other hand (or thumb), if you do have the stylus in your hand, you'll find the Taskbar Tray Icon helpful. With just a tap, you can switch back and forth between two tasks, shut a task down, switch to any other task, or bring up StarTap.

• The file management functions are taken care of by the Explorer component.

• As near as we can figure, StarTap currently (V3.51) replaces the functions of eleven programs: bTask, QuickLaunch, PalmExplorer, Flipper, PalmPics, MyTools, CaptCE, SysInfo, Sound Widget, PowerTime, and Image Expert. If you don't know how to do something, just look through these help files. chances are it's described somewhere!

• If all else fails, read the Release Notes. On the Desktop Menu: Help / Rel Notes will display the Notes that we published for our users as StarTap was being developed. There is definitely information here that you won't find in this Help File (though not nearly so well organized!).
