Faster Synchs
- If you're still letting your PPC talk to your Desktop at 19,200 bps, you're missing something! Every Desktop that we've seen is capable of connecting at 115,200 (a six-fold increase). If it doesn't work at this speed, then try 57,600. If that doesn't work, you're probably not doing it right! Do it like this:
- On your PPC, select Start Menu / Settings / Communications (or Communications in Control Panel!). From the tabs on the Dialog that opens, select PC Connection. Tap on Change Connection. In the drop down combo box, select Serial @ 115K (which is a little deceiving, because it's near the top of the list, rather than the bottom). Tap on OK and OK to get out of the dialogs.
- Now, on your Desktop: Open the Mobile Devices folder. Select File / Communications. Under Device Connections via Serial Port, note the Port: that is shown. It will probably say, "Serial Cable on COM1" or "COM2." Click Cancel and Cancel to clear the dialogs.
- Now, select Start Menu / Settings / Control Panel. Run the System applet. Select the Device Manager tab. Open the Modem node by clicking on the '+' sign. Double click on the entry that you noted before (Serial Cable on COM1 or COM2). Click on the Modem tab. Near the bottom, in the combo box Maximum speed, select 115200. Click on OK and OK to clear the dialogs, and close down Control Panel.
- Now, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. It didn't say that you had to, but believe me, YOU DO! The changes will not take effect until the machine is restarted.
- After restarting, you should be able to connect at the higher speed. If not, try it again at 57,600. If that doesn't work, try it again! You're probably doing something wrong!
- Believe me, IT'S WORTH IT!
