Zap Help
- If the synchronizing process becomes confused, or if you don't want the desktop computer to (temporarily!) delete all of its current database entries as a part of the synchronizing process after a hard reset / Restore, Zap can help.
- If you have Restored the databases on your PPC, but you want to reinitialize them from the desktop computer, do this:
- First, if you don't have a current, valid backup of the databases on the PPC, make one. Select BackUp / Databases. This way, you'll always have a fallback position.
- Now, select Erase All Databases from the Zap page. This will empty the databases that get synchronized.
- On the desktop computer, ERASE THE PARTNERSHIP ENTRY FOR THE PPC. This is the PPC icon in Mobile Devices. It's very important that the PPC establish a new partnership with the desktop. This will tell ActiveSync to go ahead and copy the databases it has down to the PPC. If you don't, the desktop machine will look at those empty databases on the PPC, and assume that's what you want. Consequently, it will go ahead and erase its own!
- Conversely, if you let the PPC establish a new partnership without erasing its existing databases, ActiveSync will perform the dreaded Combine maneuver. This will create two copies of every entry, and these are generally not completely resolved by the Remove Duplicates action.
- In short, if you erase the PPC Databases, and the partnership, things will be fine. If you do one and not the other, it's an unholy mess.
- If you have already done an unintentional Combine, then Zap can help here, too. You must already have an UnCombined BackUp of the Databases. Do a Restore / Databases on the PPC, and if they look OK, then you're all set. Also, in this case, the PPC must have a valid partnership with the desktop machine. If it doesn't, establish one. Don't worry about whatever mess is made of the databases in the process. It'll get cleaned up.
- Use Zap to erase the Databases on the PPC. Now, synchronize with the desktop. This should cause the desktop to erase it's own databases, and ActiveSync Status should show the databases as being up-to-date and empty (380 bytes, or so).
- Now - you don't even have to take the PPC out of the cradle - do a Restore / Databases. As the Restore progresses, you'll see the changes showing up in ActiveSync Status. When it's done, tell it to synchronize again.
- When all the databases are up-to-date, you should be OK, with clean, synchronized databases on both the PPC and the desktop.
